Why publish a name change in the gazette?

An affidavit alone is often not enough for passports, government records or certificates. Publication in the Gazette of India is the official public record of your new name, and is widely accepted by authorities, banks and employers.

The process

  1. Affidavit declaring the old and new name and the reason, on stamp paper and notarised – see affidavit drafting.
  2. Newspaper advertisements in two newspapers – usually one English and one in the local language.
  3. Application to the Department of Publication with the affidavit, advertisements, ID proofs and photographs.
  4. Gazette publication – the notification appears in the gazette and a copy can be downloaded.

Common reasons

  • Surname change after marriage registration or divorce
  • Spelling corrections or matching names across documents
  • Numerology, religion change or personal preference (extra documents may be needed)
  • A minor’s name change by a parent or guardian

After publication

Use the gazette copy to update your Aadhaar, PAN, passport, bank accounts and certificates. We give you a checklist for each.

Central or state gazette?

The Gazette of India, published by the Department of Publication, is accepted across the country and by central bodies such as the passport office. Some states also publish name changes in their own state gazette, which can be useful for state records such as school and university certificates. We advise which one suits your purpose – for most people, the central gazette is the right choice.

Common mistakes

  • Spellings that differ between the affidavit, the newspaper advertisements and the application.
  • Advertisements missing details – both old and new names, the address and the reason must appear as required.
  • Old photographs that do not match your current appearance.
  • Using the gazette before it is published – wait for the notification and download your copy.

Getting these right the first time avoids the application being returned, which can add weeks to the process.
