Common GST notices

NoticeWhat it usually means
ASMT-10Scrutiny of returns – discrepancies the officer wants explained
DRC-01A / DRC-01Intimation and show cause notice proposing tax, interest and penalty
REG-03Clarification needed on a registration or amendment application
REG-17Show cause notice for cancellation of registration
Mismatch noticesDifferences between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, or ITC claimed beyond GSTR-2B

Why a timely reply matters

Every notice has a deadline. Ignoring it can lead to an ex parte demand, blocked input tax credit or cancellation of registration. A clear reply with reconciliations and documents often closes the matter at the first stage.

How to read a GST notice

Check these points as soon as a notice arrives:

  • Document identification number (DIN) – genuine notices carry one and appear on the GST portal.
  • Period and issue – the tax period and what the officer is questioning.
  • Amount – the tax, interest and penalty proposed, if any.
  • Deadline – the date for your reply, and any date for a personal hearing.
  • Form – which tells you the stage of the proceedings.

The stages of a GST dispute

StageWhat happens
Scrutiny or intimationThe officer points out discrepancies and asks you to explain or pay
Show cause noticeA formal notice proposing tax, interest and penalty, with a deadline to reply
Personal hearingYou or your representative explain your case to the officer
OrderThe officer confirms, reduces or drops the demand
First appealFiled with the Appellate Authority, generally within three months, with a pre-deposit of part of the disputed tax
Further appealTo the GST Appellate Tribunal, and then the High Court on questions of law

Most disputes are cheaper to resolve at the first stage, with a clear reply and reconciliation, than after an order.

Documents to keep ready

  • The returns for the period – GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and the annual return
  • Sales and purchase registers, and GSTR-2B statements
  • Invoices, credit notes, e-way bills and transport documents
  • Bank statements showing payments to suppliers and from customers
  • Contracts and correspondence relevant to the issue raised
