FSSAI Licence Renewal and Modification

FSSAI licence renewal

An FSSAI registration or licence is valid for the period chosen when it was issued – one to five years. It must be renewed before it expires. A late renewal attracts a late fee, and once the licence lapses the business must stop food operations until a fresh licence is obtained.

FSSAI modification

Apply for a modification when something on the licence changes:

• Address of the premises (within the same authority)
• Food categories or products
• Production capacity or turnover band
• Name or constitution of the business, or the nominated person

A move to a different licensing authority, or an upgrade from registration to a State or Central licence, may need a fresh application instead.

Modification or a new licence?

Documents for renewal

• The current registration or licence
• A self-declaration that there is no change, or details of the changes
• An updated food safety management plan, for licences
• Any NOCs or test reports that have expired since the last renewal
• Proof that annual returns have been filed, where applicable

Before you renew

Renewal goes smoothly when the business is already compliant. Make sure your FSSAI annual returns are filed, any observations from earlier inspections are addressed, your premises meet hygiene requirements, and your trained food safety supervisor details are current. Renewing for a longer period – up to five years – also saves you the effort of repeated renewals.
